Providence Journal: "Taveras presents 17-point economic development plan for Providence"
By Philip Marcelo | Providence Journal
PROVIDENCE — Democratic mayoral candidate Angel Taveras presented a 17-point economic development plan on Thursday centered on retaining existing business, recruiting new ones, and reforming the way City Hall interacts with companies.
Speaking to about 30 supporters in the lobby of Epivax, a biotech company in the Jewelry District, Taveras pledged to support efforts to build a streetcar system in downtown. He proposed consolidating city departments such as Planning and Development and Inspections and Standards under one roof and establishing a new mayoral office of Economic Development.
He said he would create a new tax break for businesses improving their properties and pledged to update the city’s First Source ordinance, which requires that companies that receive tax breaks from the city give preference to unemployed residents when hiring.
Taveras said that no issue would be more important to his administration than putting people back to work and reviving the city economy.
