UNITED FOOD AND COMMERCIAL WORKERS UNION LOCAL 328 ENDORSES ANGEL TAVERAS FOR MAYOR

PROVIDENCE - Angel Taveras announced today that he has received the endorsement of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, Local 328 (UFCW).

The UFCW Local 328 represents approximately 12,000 members, making them one of the largest local unions in Southeastern New England, with over 8,000 members in Rhode Island.  UFCW Local 328 is part of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union. The International Union represents over 1.4 million working men and women throughout the United States and Canada.

“I am proud to have the support of the hardworking men and women of Local 328.” said Taveras. “I kicked off my campaign outside of an abandoned supermarket because Providence needs a Mayor who will focus on creating good-paying jobs and growing our city's economy.  As a young man, I also worked in that supermarket when it was called Star Market and was a proud member of Local 328 at the time.  I am proud to return to my roots and receive the support of one of the biggest organizations in the capital city."

“No candidate in the race for Mayor of Providence knows better the concerns of our members or working families for that matter, than Angel Tavares,” said Dave Fleming, president of Local 328.  "As a former member of our local, and a supporter of our efforts of the past ten years, we know that the future of our members, and the City of Providence, will be better with Angel Tavares as its leader.”

In the first four months after announcing his campaign for Mayor, Angel Taveras has built a wide-ranging coalition of supporters including State Senator Juan Pichardo, State Senator Rhoda Perry, State Representative Edith Ajello, State Representative Grace Diaz, City Councilman Kevin Jackson, City Councilman Cliff Wood, City Councilman Leon Tejada, City Councilman Miguel Luna, Meeting St. CEO John Kelly, Drinking Liberally founder Chris Blazejewski, attorney Casby Harrison, former US Attorney Meg Curran, attorney Kas DeCarvalho, youth jobs leader Andrew Cortes, community leader Jim Vincent, former Common Cause director Phil West, activist Tomas Avila, Ward 9 Democratic chairman Russell Conway, veteran political leader Victor Capellan, and previous gubernatorial candidate and former state senator Myrth York.
