CITY COUNCILMAN MIGUEL LUNA ENDORSES ANGEL TAVERAS FOR MAYOR

PROVIDENCE - City Councilman Miguel C. Luna (D-Ward 9) today endorsed Angel Taveras for Mayor of Providence and urged city voters to support him.  Luna joins City Council members Kevin Jackson, Leon Tejada and Cliff Wood in endorsing Taveras.

“The most important issues in our City right now are creating good paying jobs and creating affordable housing for the people of Providence,” said Luna.  “Angel has outlined a concrete plan for creating jobs and for going after the banks that got us into this foreclosure crisis.  I support his vision for social justice and I know that he will bring an ethical, responsible and hard-working approach to city government.  I urge my constituents to join me in supporting Angel for Mayor.”

Councilman Luna has represented Ward 9 since 2002.  He has been a strong voice on progressive issues including the First Source ordinance, the Providence External Review Authority, workers' rights, the creation of safe and affordable housing and increased overnight parking.  He has served on Urban Redevelopment, Renewal and Planning Committee, the Finance Committee,  the Committee of Claims and Pending Suits, the Sub Committee of Public Education and the City Park Commission.

“I am humbled and honored by the support of Councilman Luna, an important city leader who has spent the last decade fighting for social justice and to improve the lives of children and families in Providence,” said Taveras.  “Our diverse and citywide coalition continues to grow stronger each day. With this endorsement, we continue to build that coalition.”

In the first four months after announcing his campaign for Mayor, Angel Taveras has built a wide-ranging coalition of supporters including State Senator Juan Pichardo, State Senator Rhoda Perry, State Representative Edith Ajello, State Representative Grace Diaz, City Councilman Kevin Jackson, City Councilman Cliff Wood, City Councilman Leon Tejada, City Councilman Miguel Luna, Meeting St. CEO John Kelly, Drinking Liberally founder Chris Blazejewski, attorney Casby Harrison, former US Attorney Meg Curran, attorney Kas DeCarvalho, youth jobs leader Andrew Cortes, community leader Jim Vincent, former Common Cause director Phil West, activist Tomas Avila, Ward 9 Democratic chairman Russell Conway, veteran political leader Victor Capellan, and previous gubernatorial candidate and former state senator Myrth York.
